You may have heard of the Broken Windows Theory. It basically states buildings that are perceived to be abandoned or are empty for long periods of time are more likely to be vandalized – windows broken, walls tagged, the space broken into – than buildings that are occupied. And, once one building on a street or in a neighborhood has been affected other surrounding properties – even those that are occupied – are more likely to also be vandalized. Property owners, neighborhood associations, and city governments employ a variety of tactics to reduce the probability of damage due to these situations.

They say there are at least two sides to every story and that holds true for this Six Photo Story. The photos were made early on a Sunday morning after the first lockdown in Washington State was issued. Being outdoors was still allowed for exercise, as long as people were mindful of social distancing.

It is impossible for a single Six Photo Story to do justice for historical Rome. I’m not sure it is even possible to do justice with any reasonable number of photos. History permeates every nook and cranny of the city. Buildings, monuments, fountains, cobblestone streets, the golden light, the faces of the people - all hold an element of what the city has been and how it became the great capital it is today.
This story will simply provide a small taste - a tiny bit of the essence of Rome’s deep and broad history.
Trastevere
Last fall I traveled to Italy. This was my second trip and I can't wait for a third - although it's still just a wish, not a plan.
I sandwiched a few days in both Sorrento and Positano between days in Rome at the beginning and end of my travels, since I flew in and out of Rome's Fiumicino (aka Leonardo da Vinci) airport.
My first few days in Rome were spent in Trastevere.
